For instrument and drum tracking, I typically work out of trusted studios including Serotonin Productions (Gold Coast), Blackbox Recording (Moorooka), and Buffalo Speedway (Geebung). These spaces are acoustically treated and outfitted for high-end recording, giving me the flexibility to work with a wide range of artists and musical styles.
Vocals are recorded at my home studio, where I use a U47 microphone paired with either an Avalon 737 or Neve 1073 preamp. This setup delivers rich, detailed vocal recordings that sit beautifully in the mix. Since vocals are often tracked toward the end of a session, when fatigue can set in, I recommend scheduling vocal tracking with extra time and flexibility to capture your best performance. This is at no extra cost to the project.
Mixing is where the performance becomes a record. I combine analog and digital tools to craft mixes that feel alive, balanced, and emotionally impactful. My signal chain includes:
Analog summing via the Folcrom Summing Mixer for natural width and depth
Compression from units like the 1176 REV A/D, Smart Research C2, and DBX 160X
Preamp color from handmade Neve 1073 channels
Monitoring through Dynaudio BM5A mk1 speakers for accuracy and detail
I mix in Pro Tools, utilizing a wide selection of plugins from UAD, Waves, FabFilter, Soundtoys, and others. My mixes are printed back through analog gear to preserve warmth and cohesion, resulting in a final product that sounds just as good on a phone as it does in a car or on a festival PA.
Although I do not offer mastering in-house for the song I have mixed, I strongly recommend having your mix professionally mastered. I can refer you to several trusted mastering engineers who will ensure your music is ready for distribution across all platforms.
To make the most of your studio time, I also provide pre-production guidance. Great recordings start long before you hit "record," so I work with artists to:
Finalize song arrangements, tempos, and keys
Build tempo maps in your DAW for tighter tracking
Review demos and reference tracks to clarify sonic direction
Prepare lyric sheets, chord charts, and session notes for smoother sessions
I can also help with rehearsal planning, especially when using click tracks, and make sure you and your band are ready to walk into the studio and focus on performance, not logistics.
From years of experience in the studio, I’ve developed a checklist that helps artists avoid common setbacks:
Gear readiness: Instruments should be freshly strung, tuned, and maintained. Bring spare strings, sticks, picks, and cables.
Click track planning: Decide ahead of time who needs a click in their headphones.
Band roles: Assign a bandleader for faster decision-making and keep communication clear during the session.
Etiquette: Be punctual, stay focused, and take scheduled breaks to avoid burnout or ear fatigue.
Creative mindset: Come in with a clear idea of the sound you want—but be open to collaboration and feedback. The best results often come from a relaxed, flexible approach.
In addition to the technical side of engineering and mixing, I see myself as a kind of counsellor and mediator during recording sessions. The studio can be a high-pressure environment—bands are often working through creative differences, performance anxiety, or simply the stress of turning ideas into something permanent. I aim to create a space where everyone feels heard, respected, and creatively safe.
I help artists navigate group dynamics, resolve conflicts, and stay focused on the shared goal: making the best possible record. Whether it’s encouraging a vocalist through a tough take, helping a band agree on an arrangement, or simply knowing when to take a break, I bring a calm, balanced energy that keeps sessions productive and positive. My job isn’t just to capture great sounds—it’s to foster an environment where great performances can happen.
